Wednesday Miscellany

There's nothing like finally getting around to placing an order for 100 guitar effect pedal knobs, getting them in, and finding out you ordered the wrong kind. Ugh. Returning them is only a minor hassle, but it's still annoying. The correct ones have been ordered — and I double-checked my part number this time.

My wife found what seems to be a totally awesome clear coat, and I'm going to try it on my pedals. It describes itself as being "super clear, super glossy, and an unbelievably tough yet flexible coating that dries to a clear-as-water, rock-hard finish that won't crack, chip, peel, or yellow in sunlight." Of course, I'll probably have to wear a hazmat suit to apply it, and animals under 5 pounds will drop dead within a 20 foot radius — but it'll be tough once dry.

We shall see.

I need some new books to read. I head rave reviews about "Day by Day Armageddon," so I grabbed it. It was a good read for that genre — and it really was a "page turner." There aren't many books out there that can really make you stop what you were planning to do so that you can read just a few more more pages, but DbDA did just that. It's also ranked 4.5/5 starts after a whopping 171 reviews at Amazon.

And you never know: when zombies begin to walk the Earth — and assuming you aren't one — you'll be glad you read a book that let you know to fill a bug sprayer with kerosene for use as a make-shift flame thrower. =)

Man, I don't have much to say or post, mainly because most of my waking, non-work moments have been filled with working on my guitar effects (or watching Frasier). I really need to finish my San Francisco vacation pictures...

Same Kind of Different As Me

We read it for our Women’s Ministry book club. It’ll make you re-think a lot in life.

If you want to read it, I’ll mail you our copy. Or bring it when we go see Lois in a few weeks.

Apply the clear coat near your neighbors annoying weenie dogs… just a thought…

Are there any zombies in it (the book, I mean)?

Um no…it’s still good though.

Maury:

I seem to recall I sent you a paperback of Asimov’s “I, Robot”.

If you are looking for simply great reading, check out Orson Scott Card’s “Ender’s Game”.

Written long ago, it’s still not outdated by technical advances - in fact, the ‘desks’ mentioned in this novel so resemble what I expect future tablet Macs to be that it’s prophetic.  Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards this is one of the most riveting books I know.  I gave it to a friend who called me a couple of days later.  He’d started reading it before bed and at 4:15 the next morning he realized he’d better get some sleep and he resented having to put it down.

What’s totally amazing is Card wrote a few follow up books that were good but not great.  Then, something like 20 years after he wrote Ender’s Game he wrote “Ender’s Shadow” which follows the original book from a one of the great secondary character’s point of view.  Combined, these two together are totally captivating.
