RAILhead Effects TUA Finalized

Holy crap on a land mine, I have created a serious monster. For over a year now, I've been working on a massively heavy metalcore distortion box — The TUA (Total, Utter Annihilation) — and I finally got it to where I was ready to fabricate a board. It started out as a modified version of the Dual Rectifier circuit, but I did loads of tweaking to get it to sound exactly how I want it to — and mother, is it AWESOME. After biasing the transistors, I just stood there and played and played and played — eventually stopping in a fit of mischievous, childish laughter. This, Pedal. Rules. There is nothing nice or pretty about the TUA — it's simply the sounds of Perdition trapped inside a metal box.

My mics and mic stand are in my truck, and since it's as hot as Perdition outside, I can't record anything right now — but I'm planning on taking care of sound samples this week, so stay tuned on that front. Man, that’s a densely populated board. What do all the knobs do?

I love it. It just looks serious.

Right now, I have: Volume, Bass, Mid, Treble, Presence, Gain.

I have the tone controls setup as boost/cuts, and I have the Mid hopped-up to get a crazy range in those bands. It’s like saturation control on steroids. Presence brings the sound forward or backward in the mix, and it’s really sweet to use with the Mid.

That got a good laugh out of me.  Stop making stuff that my husband wants to buy.

What was happening on Wednesday around noon is what I want to know??

Do you think the Pope’s john has a sign that says “holy crap?”

If not, it should.

The original name for my “io” was “Holy Crap,” but I never could convince Karen to paint a turd with a halo above it. :(

One bugger with the TUA, though, is the dadgum DC jack in front. Here’s the conundrum:

1. Personally, I hate DC jacks that are too close to input jacks, because it’s hard to have right angle patch cords that close to the power supply cord: one is going to have to float above the other, and the cables won’t lay flat (this is on of my problems with ZVEX pedals).

2. A couple of people have expressed concern that they’ll hit the power jack when stomping on the box, and I suppose I can see how that would be possible - though I’d never do it. A right angle DC jack would solve this issue, and I could include one with every pedal.

3. I don’t like PC mounted jacks because I like to secure the jack to the enclosure to make sure it stays in position. Also, I hate the way pedals look when they just have a hole in the shell with the jack inside - too unfinished for me.

4. I could be totally nuts and mount the DC jack on the top of the pedal, as far away from the stomp switch as possible…

Right now, I’m just going to see how far off center I can get it mounted on the front, and I may make 2 foot right angle power supply cables to ship with it. My main goal was to get this massive pedal into my standard size shell, and this layout is just too good to not keep.

Ship the cable. Simple, easy, done.
